17-ouncepackage elbow macaroni, uncooked
1/4cupbutter, cubed
1/4cupall-purpose flour
1/2teaspoonsalt
Dashof pepper
2cupswhole milk
18-ouncepackage shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
1Cayenne pepper (optional)

In large saucepan, cook macaroni according to package directions. Meanwhile, in a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
Stir in flour, salt and pepper until smooth; gradually whisk in milk. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly; cook and stir 1-2 minutes longer or until thickened.
Stir in cheese until melted.
Drain macaroni; add cheese sauce and stir to coat. If desired, sprinkle with cayenne pepper.
