In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, ketchup, dry mustard, Worcestershire sauce, bouillon, salt and pepper. Use your hands to mix well. Form the meat mixture into 8 large oval patties.
Add the butter and oil to a 12-inch skillet and heat over medium-high heat. Fry the patties on both sides until no longer pink in the middle, about 4-5 minutes per side. Remove from the skillet and pour off excess grease.
Reduce the heat to medium and add the sliced onions. Stir and sauté for about 5 minutes, until onions are golden brown and somewhat soft.
Add the remaining gravy ingredients, whisking continuously. Heat and stir until slightly thickened.
Return the cooked patties to the gravy. Spoon the gravy over the tops and let them simmer on low until heated back up.
Serve over mashed potatoes or noodles, if desired.
