Equipment

  • Large baking sheet
  • Serrated bread knife
  • Aluminum foil

Ingredients

  • 1 round loaf sourdough bread (about 1.5 lbs)
  • 16 ounces Monterey jack cheese, sliced
  • 1/2 cup salted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

Instructions

  • Using a sharp bread knife, cut bread loaf into 1-inch slices to within ½-inch of bottom of loaf. Repeat cuts in the opposite direction, making a checkerboard appearance.
  • Insert cheese slices into all cuts and place loaf on prepared pan.
  • Mix melted butter with lemon juice, mustard, garlic powder and onion powder. Drizzle over bread.
  • Wrap aluminum foil around the bread and bake 20 minutes.
  • Unwrap and bake until cheese is melted and starting to brown, about 10 minutes longer.
  • Sprinkle with chives and serve immediately.

Notes

Using a store-bought loaf of sourdough makes this recipe fast and easy. Homemade sourdough bread can also be used.
