Jorgensen Land & Cattle
For over a century, Jorgensen Land & Cattle has stood as a pillar of agricultural excellence, combining traditional family values with cutting-edge practices. As a fourth-generation family operation, Jorgensen Land & Cattle has balanced innovation with a commitment to preserving its heritage. This careful blend of tradition and progress has sustained the farm’s operations and positioned it as a leader in agriculture.
Grazing Cattle at Jorgensen Land
At the heart of Jorgensen Land & Cattle’s operations is a dedication to raising Black Angus seed stock. However, the farm’s success in livestock production is deeply intertwined with its farming operations. Central to this is the use of winter wheat, a crucial part of the farm’s rotational cropping system.
“Without winter wheat in our rotation, it would be really difficult for us to do some of the things we do,” said Nick Jorgensen.“It’s very important that we utilize winter wheat as our primary crop.”
Without wheat, managing livestock feed and utilizing cover crops and diverse forages would be increasingly difficult. The farm’s reliance on winter wheat extends beyond just harvesting a crop; it helps maintain soil health by increasing organic matter, improving soil structure and nutrient availability.
Jorgensen Land Fencing
Adequate fencing is another crucial element in the farm’s operations. Grazing livestock on farmland requires both physical and virtual fencing to maximize land use. And, physical fencing provides the necessary infrastructure to manage grazing patterns, while virtual fencing, which uses GPS technology, offers additional flexibility. Over the past four years, Jorgensen Land & Cattle has integrated virtual fencing collars into its operation. These GPS-enabled devices act as virtual barriers, allowing control over grazing areas and enabling the use of an additional 6,000 acres that would otherwise be inaccessible due to limitations in physical infrastructure.
Jorgensen Land & Cattle operates on a substantial scale, managing approximately 25,000 acres. Despite its large size, the farm remains deeply committed to environmental stewardship. The health of the soil is fundamental not only for raising livestock but also for growing the feed necessary for their diets. By focusing on responsible land management, Jorgensen Land & Cattle aims to ensure that the land remains fertile and productive for future generations.
Innovation and Sustainability
The Jorgensens’ commitment to innovation and sustainability is matched by their dedication to their family roots. The vision is clear: to transition the operation to the next generation in better condition than it was received.
“First and foremost, we are stewards of this land, so that we can pass it on to the next generation, where it’s better than it was when we received it,” said Jorgensen.
Jorgensen Land & Cattle exemplifies how traditional values can harmonize with modern practices to create a thriving, sustainable agricultural operation. The farm’s innovative approach to livestock management, soil health and land use ensures that it remains at the forefront of the industry while honoring its long-standing commitment to family and environmental stewardship. As Jorgensen Land & Cattle continues to evolve, it remains steadfast in its mission to provide a better future for both its family and the land it cherishes.
