Sugar Cookie Facts + History

  • Sugar cookies were pioneered by the German Protestants that settled in Nazareth, Pennsylvania and created the predecessor to our modern round, buttery, sugary goodness that we know and love. These bakers were so influential in sugar cookie history that they were originally called Nazareth Cookies.
  • Creaming butter and sugar can help you create fluffy cookie consistency while getting more cookies out of your batch. This technique adds air to the dough, giving it a lighter texture.
  • Wanting to change the color of the cookie? Different types of sugar can affect the color of the cookie. Lighter sugar colors will have a lighter finished cookie. Light or dark brown sugar will turn out with a darker finished cookie.
  • Pillsbury won the world record for most cookies iced in one hour! They recruited shoppers at the Mall of America to decorate a total of 1,169 cookies to win the honor in 2015.
  • Nazareth Cookies isn’t the only other name sugar cookies have had! Gemmels, crybabies, gimblettes, cimbellines, jumbles, and plunkets… Oh my!
